About Chamonix

Chamonix Mont-Blanc in Haute-Savoie is one of the leading alpine ski and snowboard resorts in France.

Host to the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924, Chamonix also offers unrivalled opportunities for summer activities. Situated amid the dramatic mountain scenery surrounding Western Europe’s highest peak, it boasts plenty of modern facilities while retaining its original local character and charm.

In 1741 two Englishmen Wyndham and Pocock discovered the potential of climbing in the region by ascending the peaks around Montenvers. This was followed by the intrepid ascent of Mont Blanc by Jacques Balmat and Dr Michel-Gabriel Paccard who became the first mountaineers to reach the summit on August 8th 1786. Ever since these historic events the Chamonix valley has held a unique fascination for all who come to visit “la capitale mondiale du ski et de l’alpinisme”.
